Kite Flying

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

A couple of years ago I had the notion to get a kite and go flying. It took a while until I finally actually bought the kite (A Beetle in March of this year), and took months after that until I actually flew the kite.

Well, this past Friday I finally went to fly (with my Mom). I never considered simply walking three minutes to the soccer field behind the house, but that turns out to be a fairly okay place. There’s a big building and a line of trees, but the wind is good enough to have quite a bit of fun.

So, the next day brother Matt was here, so we went flying, my skills improved dramatically, and I was able to teach him how to get it up into the air.

It was so much fun that on Sunday I invited brother David & Louise over to go flying. The wind was a bit tricky, but it was still incredibly enjoyable.

Well, turns out that I now have a Prism Hypnotist on the way from Midwest Kites (where I bought my Beetle). At more than twice the cost of the Beetle, I didn’t want that to be my first kite, but since I have had so much fun, I didn’t mind committing more money to the ’sport’ at this point.

I think the next kite, hah, will be a power/traction foil. I saw pictures of tracks in the sand left by the feet of people being pulled along by the kites, made me instantly giddy like a schoolboy. I also saw a photo of what looked like someone on a sled being pulled in the snow. Now, that looks like a lot of fun. Imagine, not needing to have a hill for sledding, just using the power of the wind, being able to steer, etc. Whee!
