the need for more crunching power
My parents are away for a few days, so I figured why waste the computer power he has sitting down there? :) I installed my SETI@home client on his athlon 950 and well, damn, it can do some seriously crunching compared to my paltry Duron… so now, I’m on the thought train to getting an Athlon processor, yeah… lol. I wonder just how much more ooomph I could get out of a 1.4Ghz Athlon…. hmm… well… checking the prices… the damn 200FSB version of the 1.4 is just a bit too expensive, and the 266FSB version is a lot cheaper, no need to waste money. I think I’ll upgrade still, but… to say… a 1GHZ Athlon instead, perhaps… that’s $75.00 which is half the price basically of the 1.4GHZ.
FAN GLOBAL WIN WBK38 DUAL FOR INTEL P3 & AMD TBIRD CPUs $39.95
AMD T-BIRD 1.2GHZ 200BUS SKT-A OEM PROCESSOR $99.95
Hmm…?
I actually found a place with the processor for 81 dollars and a CoolerMaster DP5 fan/heatsink for 16 dollars… lol, and the shipping is less than 10 dollars, so I htink that’s a much preferred… I’m not sure though, my dad’s computer has seemed to slow down a bit on the processing of the recent WU from seti@home… so I’m not sure, but I really want to go ahead and upgrade this; the extra cache and oomph of an Athlon versus Duron wouldn’t hurt, that’s for certain.
