wireless happiness

Sunday, 30th June, 2002 :: 00:10 EDT - Tech

Well, I’m sending the Netgear WAP back, will call to get the RMA monday.

I got the Apple Airport yesterday, it’s awesome, so much better than the Netgear WAP that it’s almost laughable that Netgear would even bother to put such a hunk of crap on the market.

Uhm… I want to talk about stuff but just don’t feel like it… err, oh well.

sucky day

Thursday, 27th June, 2002 :: 23:23 EDT - Sidenotes

I have clients going on about things in which make no sense… trying to track down some bizzare spam thing that doesn’t really ahve anything to do with me, but could… it’s annoying, it’s awful, and I want to stomp out whomever/whatever is doing it. My stomach has felt like crap the last couple of days, the last two days my allergies have been in overdrive… To top that off my NTP in linux is severely off, so my clock is five minutes behind… hello? ntp is supposed to prevent that.

Oh, and what was supposed to be the crowning achievement of my day… going wireless… was the biggest dissapointment… I know wireless isn’t as fast as wired ethernet of course… I should be able to get at least 4/5mbps… I couldn’t even get over 80KB/s… :-( The netgear me102 wireless access point turns out to be very much windows only with proprietary software… the WEP encryption is a TOTAL pain in the ass, as in, I can only barely get it to work… which isn’t a problem so much ehre in the neighborhood of 80 year old women, but would be in the future of course. The only redeeming factor, and it’s something that the aiport base has anyway is the MAC addy locking thing…

So… although it’s the most attractive of the bunch (of WAPs)… I *HATE* it…

I was thinking of keeping it for a while and then upgrading myself… but this is NOT the wireless experience that I wanted… and… even though I’ll be spending $200 more, basically… if it works, I’ll be a lot happier.

I always thought thought the airport base stations were too expensive… but… damnit, oh well… I just bought one.

I’m also really tired… I haven’t slept… since yesterday afternoon… :-/

I’m… horny, but in that… erm… well… knowing you won’t have satisfaction kind of way.

today sucked… curses on 27 June 2002!

Thomas Jefferson time

Thursday, 27th June, 2002 :: 10:23 EDT - Quotes

I have examined all the known superstitions of the word, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth.

Christianity…(has become) the most perverted system that ever shone on man. …Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and importers led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus.

–Thomas Jefferson

…if it were so corrupt then… he must be figuratively vomiting in his grave now.

netatalk

Wednesday, 26th June, 2002 :: 05:47 EDT - Tech

I had solved the problem with video playback… for about five minutes…

then I did something with the netatalk config…. and destroyed it. :(

So… I’m back to square one… jerky video… and down by 130 bucks for the ram.

sigh…

Well, my 512MB SO-DIMM for the iBook came today. I popped it in.

Installation was very simple, with the exception that I couldn’t immediately find a screw driver tip that was small enough to take the ram shield off. Those screws are TINY TINY!

OS X is astonishingly faster, which is quite nice really, unfortunately my network video playback still doesn’t work without “stuttering” every now and then… it’s better than before, but not quite good enough.

Mpegs seem to play okay… 3ivx encoded quicktime from avi do not play without a stutter, nor do .wmv files.

Thankfully all play (with the exception of my most recent 3ivx encode) when on the iBook’s harddrive… just not over the network. They DO play through my brother’s iMac and the network though.. so there just must not be enough processor oomph I guess…. it’s quite a dissapointment. :(

I’m re-encoding my latest encode to mpeg from the divx… hopefully that will play successfully… I think that mpeg just might be a better option for the future.. so we’ll see.
