The Reine Victoria Rose

I have fallen in love with this rose, as much as one can I believe. She’s La Reine Victoria, a Bourbon Rose, bred in France in 1872. I planted the bareroot in early spring 2004, the rose grew tremendously that year, but did not bloom at all. I feel as though I am being rewarded for my patience and I’m certainly appreciative. This is one of the two true ‘old garden’ roses I have, the other is Louise Odier. She’s also a French Bourbon, even older being bred in 1851.

As much as I adore the ‘new’ “old” roses, those being the ones bred by David Austin in England, there’s something so esoterically satisfying about having these true old roses. I definitely need to find room for more… and find where I can purchase them and not go utterly bankrupt in the process.

    Hello,
This response doesn’t quite fit your article but I couldn’t figure out any other way to contact Indiboi. I found your site after Googling the X Shop and appreciate the information there. I’m considering doing some woodworking and am limited in space and funds. I had a suggestion for Indiboi on his joining for some of his projects. It is the Kreg Jig. A cabinet-maker I know showed it to me and how it works. It will reduce the need for clamps-especially the long one he mentioned for the bar top. Google for their site & they’re sold at Lowe’s. Yeah, it costs, but so does buying the clamps. I hope I’m not too late with the suggestion.
The rose is beautiful. We finally had a good spring and two wet ones in a row here in Central Virginia and our roses exploded this year. We have tried to stay with older roses. One source here orders from the Antique Rose Emporium. I’ve bookmarked your site and will catch up on your garden adventures as I can.
    Thank you again.
